How to Create Bootable (Live) USB Drives

In this lab I will show you two methods of creating a bootable USB drive in Linux.

The fast and easy way is as follows:

  • Download the Operating System ISO file
  • Plug in the USB drive
  • Type: dd if=/path/to/the.iso of=/dev/usb_drive

The proper way of doing this (takes longer) is as follows:

  • Download and install unetbootin application (also available in Windows) from http://unetbootin.github.io/
  • Download the Operating System ISO file
  • Format the USB drive as FAT32
  • Launch unetbootin and install the ISO to the USB drive.

That’s it!
